Buy Event Tickets While Traveling
Finding museums, free tours, and sites around new cities is relatively easy to do. One thing that I don’t hear a lot of other travelers talking about is attending a sporting event or any other event while abroad. Having been to a soccer match in Italy, I now recommend that friends buy event tickets while traveling to experience events with locals.
Prior to traveling to Milan in November of 2014, I looked at soccer clubs in the city that were playing while my friends and I would be in town. Low and behold, AC Milan would be playing Udinese in the Serie A league.
So, having tasked myself with this challenge, I began to look on the internet for tickets. eBay and other sites like Craigslist aren’t as popular as what they are back in the USA. Eventually, I found a site called ViaGoGo that appears to be a big marketplace for events across the world.
My experience with ViaGoGo has been limited to just this one purchase, but it was super smooth and we received our tickets via e-Tickets prior to leaving the USA.
Some other places where you could find tickets while traveling would are:
- ViaGoGo
- Ticketmaster (some international markets)
- eTix
- Empire Tickets
- Have another? Let me know in the comments below.
Similar in concept to ‘Student Rush’ tickets for Broadway, I believe that a good number of cities & towns in Europe have this offer. Basically, show up tot the box office early in the morning to receive deeply discounted tickets for an opera or another event.
If you are having difficulties buying event tickets while traveling, you have a few options. When I was meeting my friend Steve in Cairo, Egypt, I took a taxi and talked with the driver about soccer matches that were occurring in town. Since Cairo is the capital city, there are a lot of teams. The hostel front desk is also another resource you could use to buy tickets.
If there’s any chance you have to attend an event of any sorts abroad, do it. One of my favorite travel highlights has been that soccer match in Milan.
